3 CLIFFSIDE PARK CITIZEN FEBRUARY 3, 2012 CURBSIDE PICK UP Revenue from recycling efforts to support PAL According to Leasing "Some recovered textiles become wiping and polishing cloths. Cotton can be made into rags or form a component for new high-quality paper. Knitted or woven woolens and similar materials are 'pulled' into a fibrous state for reuse by the textile industry in low-grade applications, such as car insulation or seat stuffing. Other types of fabric can be reprocessed into fibers for upholstery, insulation, and even building materials. Buttons and zippers are stripped off for reuse.

Very little is left over at the end of the recycling process. "The remaining natural materials, such as various grades of cotton, can be composted. If all available means of reuse and recycling are utilized, the remaining solid waste that needs to be disposed of can be as low as five percent." The borough's agreement with Leasing which became effective Jan. 1, comes at no expense to the borough. In fact, Cliffside Park will receive revenue for each ton of old clothing and textiles collected.

One hundred percent of the revenues received from this recycling effort will support the borough's Police Athletic League (PAL) Program as well as other non-profit community activities. On the first and third Friday of every month, Leasing Corp. will collect old clothing and textiles which are placed curbside in plastic bags. The company has provided stickers, which residents should place on the bags of clothing to distinguish them from bags of ordinary waste. The stickers may be obtained from the Department of Public Works Annex at 235 Main St.

or on the third floor of Borough Hall. Additionally, there is a drop-off site available at the Public Works Annex. Mayor Calabrese encourages residents to "help make this program a success for everyone. Our effort will play a crucial role in keeping the materials out of the waste stream and help us save tax dollars." PAL, one of the primary beneficiaries of revenue generated from this recycling effort, has served the youth of Cliffside Park for more than 60 years. It is a recreation-oriented juvenile crime prevention program which seeks to develop a bond between community youth and the police department.

Some of the Cliffside Park PAL programs include exercise, weight lifting, academic tutoring and computer training. PAL also supports an annual scholarship program, the Cliffside Park Little League Baseball Association, an annual essay contest and a Field Day for seventh grade students. Cliffside Park Lt. Timothy Kelly, who heads the borough's PAL program, encouraged all borough residents. "Take advantage of the clothing recycling program because the money generated from the recycling will turn your trash into real treasure for the kids who benefit from the PAL program.

The kids need your support," he said. Curbside collection occurs on the first and third Fridays of every month. Email: rosenfeld northjersey.com BYSTACEY ROSENFELD Staff Writer In an attempt to expand its recycling efforts and simultaneously generate revenue for the borough, Cliffside Parle, in partnership with Leasing Corporation, now provides curbside pick up of old clothing and other textiles, such as sheets and towels. After the items have been picked up, recovery facilities separate worn or stained clothing into a variety of categories. According to the Council for Textile Recycling (CTR), textile recycling is the procedure by which used clothing is reused or reprocessed.

CTR says that many tons of discarded garments end up in landfills annually. Yet, they estimate that nearly 99 percent of used clothing may be recyclable. ACCIDENT Cliffside Park resident struck, killed by DPW truck I i BYSTACEY ROSENFELD Staff Writer On Monday, Jan. 23 at approximately 2:30 p.m., a Fairview DPW pickup truck struck and killed Cliffside Park resident, Norma Sackman, 68.
