PROSTITUTION RING Spitzer scandal linked to Bergen-run site Cliffside Park men managed Emperors Club VIP decision-making finances foot-5-inch brunette, was already inside the hotel room when she placed a telephone call to New York. Karen told the other line, booking agent Temeka Lewis, that Client 9 had arrived. Client 9 was later identified as the governor of New York. Spitzer had booked room 871 under the name George Fox, the affidavit said, adding that the governor was known throughout the prostitution ring by that name. Spitzer was not a one-time user of the Emperor Club; by early February, he had built credit of up to $500 to his name with hopes of using it toward his next appointment, the affidavit said.

The next appointment came Feb. 13, when Kristen, with help from Lewis and Brener and Spitzer's wallet, booked a train from Penn Station in New York to Washington, D.C. volume of traffic, the page urges browsers to "try again later." On Tuesday, the site's server said the page was disabled. But prior to this week, visitors could have easily logged on to the site to check the club's rates and services. Pictures on the site depicted the prostitutes' bodies, however faces were always hidden.

A rating system using diamonds revealed the price by hour for each girl -one diamond costs the least, seven diamonds the most. Investigators said that a seven-diamond prostitute charged $3,100 an hour. Spitzer's situation A 47-page federal affidavit from an FBI agent introduced the public on Monday to a call girl named Kristen, Room 871 in Washington, D.C.'s well-to-do Mayflower hotel, and the mysterious Client 9. The affidavit details that Kristen, a 5- FBI agents could earn him up to 20 years in prison. But the discovery of Spitzer's involvement was a by-product of a federal money laundering investigation.

Originally launched to catch the operators of the Emperors Club VIP, the probe tracked Brener, 62, and Suwal, 23, and two New York City residents for several months. Authorities learned that the Web site, www.emperorsclubvip.com, attracted wealthy men from across the country and set them up with prostitutes in New York, Washington, Los Angeles and Miami. The online site also had call girls overseas, including London and Paris. Brener, the complaint states, was the head of the operation, as he had final "decision-making authority." Suwal controlled the finances and managed two booking agents 36-year-old Tanya Hollander and 32-year-old Teme-ka Rachelle Lewis along with the applications for potential call girls. According to the complaint filed with U.S.

District Court in Manhattan, all four individuals were charged with conspiracy to violate federal prostitution statutes. Additionally, the two Cliffside Park residents were hit with separate conspiracy to commit money laundering. The complaint states that Brener and Suwal had planned to swindle more than $1 million from Web site profits. All four individuals face up to five years in prison for the prostitution counts, while Brener and Suwal can earn another 20 years on the money laundering charge. The operation A visit to the Emperors Club Web site early this week led Internet users to an unavailable page.

Claiming that the site has a high BY DARIUS AMOS Editor The filing of federal charges to two Cliffside Park residents last week shook the streets of that quiet suburban town, but the investigation leading up to it uncovered more than just a side story. Cliffside Park's Mark Brener and Cecil Suwal were two of four people charged in U.S. District Court with running an upscale, international prostitution ring on the Internet. Among the clients who paid up to $5,500 an hour was New York State Gov. Eliot Spitzer.

Spitzer, a first-term Democrat, publicly apologized on Monday for his connection and dealings with the prostitution operation. He wasn't formally charged with a crime at press time, but Spitzer's alleged actions based on federal wiretapping and affidavits from HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS Students may apply to scholarship fund Hackensack Riverkeeper is now accepting applications for the 2008 Ron Vellekamp Environmental Scholarship. Now in its eighth year, the program was created in 2001 to support college-bound high school seniors who exhibit both a strong academic record as well as a strong commitment to the environment. The guidance departments of 65 high schools that serve students from the Hackensack River Watershed were contacted and invited to nominate one of their own. All students who reside or attend school within the watershed are eligible to apply.

The Hackensack River watershed is an area of approximately 210 square miles in size that lies within part of New York's Rockland County as well as Bergen and Hudson counties in New Jersey. Guidance counselors and faculty advisors can submit applications on behalf of deserving students. A review panel that includes Capt. Bill Sheehan, trustees and staffers of Hackensack Riverkeeper will review each application. In deciding upon a winner, the panel will consider each applicant's academic achievements, environmental extra-curricular activities and future plans.

The $1,000 scholarship is unrestricted and can be used for any required purchases during the student's first year at college. "Each year we're faced with the dilemma of choosing one winner from a group of very talented and dedicated young people but one always manages to stand out," said Hugh Carola, Hackensack River-keeper's program director and scholarship administrator. "I always look forward to reviewing each group of applications." Application criteria are available online at www.HackensackRiver-keeper.org or by calling Carola at 201-968-0808. Applications must be postmarked no later than Earth Day, April 22. The winner will be announced June 1.
