8 APRIL 13, 2012 RPPLFLBB i 0 i nfl--, mt i mm mm If lil LIBRARY Village to take part in World Book Night In 5,000 towns and cities across America, volunteers will give away half a million free books on April 23. World Book Night U.S. is an ambitious campaign to give away half a million free, specially printed books across America. Volunteer book lovers will help promote reading by going into their communities and handing out free copies of a book they enjoy to new or light readers, reaching them especially in underserved places -and even some fun spots. The volunteers will be picking up their books at a local bookstore or library in order to share them in locations as diverse as VA hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, ballparks, mass transit, diners and more.

The Ridgefield Park Public Library is proud to be a community partner for the first World Book Night in the U.S., following the impressive launch of this campaign in the UK and Ireland last year. The goal is to get books into the hands of those who don't normally embrace reading. If hesitant about reading or know someone who is, please look for Ridgefield Park Library's director, Eileen Mackesy-Karpoff, on the corner of Mt. Vernon and Main streets around 6 p.m. on Monday, April 23.

There will be books (while the supply lasts) for new or light readers and candy for veteran readers. For more information, visit www.worldbooknight. org. MEMORIAL SERVICE Fred Holmes Fred Holmes, 74, a former firefighter from Ridgefield Park Truck 1, passed away on Feb. 12 in Lake Placid, Fla.
