3 EDGEWATER VIEW APRIL 12, 2013 COMMUNITY Celebrating a home town hero CHRISTOPHER TRENTOPHOTOS Chris and Lee Clark with Head Coach Fran Orlowski of the Leonia High School basketball team at the 18th Annual Lee Clark Scholarship Fundraiser on April 6. Dozens turn out for 18th annual fundraiser Clark turned 80 this year and, for the first year in a long time, didn't coach or go to any games, but has kept in touch with Fran Orlowski, the current Leonia High School basketball coach and founder of the Lee Clark Fundraiser, along with local attorney Phil Boggia, who was a member of the 1967 state championship team and helps to organize the fundraiser. 'You learned that if you prepare and work hard, good things will happen," Boggia said, recalling one of the lessons Clark imparted to him. The Lee Clark scholarship fund, which currently has approximately $49,000, gives out a $1,000 scholarship to a high-character basketball player from the varsity SEE CELEBRATING, PAGE 4 Four and a bevy of food provided by Ed Young, owner of the Outback Steakhouse in Edgewater. "I've lived in Leonia for 15 years and I've been catering this for 10 years," Young said.

"It's all about giving back to the town and making the people happy." Chris Clark, Lee's son, grew up in Bogota but spent much of his time playing basketball in Leonia. "He's a person that's admired from the great town of Leonia and he's admired outside of the town for his legacy," Clark said. One highlight for Chris took place when the court at Leonia High School was named after his father in 2007. Lee Clark, who coached basketball until his 70s, has since retired to Manahawkin, but not before doing some assistant coaching down at Pineland Regional High School. Hundreds of prizes were given out to those in attendance, ranging from t-shirts to seats at New York Yankees and New York Mets baseball games. The fundraiser pulled in $4,000.
