EDGEWATER VIEW OCTOBER 1, 2010 EDUCATION Leonia school district presents 2010-2011 goals President Obama waits in the Butlers' Pantry as he is introduced to the National Governors Association meeting at the White House, Feb. 22, 2010. The president is scheduled to visit Cresskill on Oct. 6 for a fundraiser. POLITICS A presidential visit Obama to visit Cresskill for fundraiser for Democratic Party assessments of standardized Language Arts tests.

The Middle School's Literacy Task Force will include this goal within its charge, while Leonia High School will include reading and writing across the content areas as one tactic to address its objective of improving student performance on Advanced Placement exams. "The first two goals are relatively ambitious but necessary because in the case of goal number one, we're looking to set our programs to resources that are stressed for reasons that are obvious," Josefsberg said. The second goal also requires teachers to look at the results of current instructional approaches and finding ways of better supporting students, while bringing to bear a culture of continuous improvement upon those specific concerns. THE REFERENDUM The third set of goals pertains to the school referendum project and completion of the project on time and on budget. Solar panels are expected to be installed at Leonia High School sometime between the end of September and the beginning of October as planned.

The district has already completed the roofs, and the Heat Ventilation Air Conditioning systems are currently being implemented. According to Josefsberg, the capital project remains on schedule, under budget and incident free. "We have the managerial oversight in place already, and the construction is going well on schedule," Josefsberg added. "It's a matter of seeing it through." TEACHER CONTRACTS The fourth goal entails reaching a fair and equitable settlement with teachers as they begin negotiating contracts that will expire in June 201 1. "We want to go into spring with the expectations that we have to agree upon a successful contract with our teachers," Josefsberg explained as Leonia teachers go into the final year of a three-year contract.

The presentation comes at a time when the district is faced with the challenge of maintaining and improving the quality of educational programs despite a $427,000 cut in state aid and a volatile political environment. "The first goal talks about looking at the secondary school programs of study and revising them," said Josefsberg of the two year goal. "It breaks out several considerations that have to be 'brought to bear' on the revision of program studies." Josefsberg said goal one will involve organizing staff and stake holders to consider collectively what educational programs in the district should include in the coming years.

"It's a matter of organizing 'arenas' for discussion and deliberation and taking recommendations to determine what the board should consider by way of it's programs," Josefsberg explained. "It's a form of strategic planning." The middle and high schools programs will be revised based on the assessment of the educational relevance of particular courses and programs; and their cost effectiveness relative to educational alternatives. The daily schedules in the middle and high schools will also be amended as needed to support program revisions. The district hopes to implement the initial changes by next September. Important considerations include the impact of national common core standards, the impact of 21st century learning standards, and state and federal requirements.

Other considerations include the availability of off-site, distance learning and related educational options, local values, and staffing efficiencies. STUDENT PERFORMANCE The second set of goals involves improving student performance in reading, writing, and thinking through language arts, while equaling or exceeding district-wide results on state Edgewater View publishes every Friday. Shah, who was invited to the fundraising dinner Obama will be attending, did not think it was a good idea for the president to come with the sole purpose of raising money for his campaign. "It's ridiculous," he said. "Those funds should be allocated to other uses and to help fix other problems in the country," he added. Shah said Obama's time in Cresskill should be spent creating jobs as well as stimulating the economy.

"There is not much to say if he is not addressing the citizens or local businesses," said John Cam-poli, a Cresskill resident and business owner. "His time here is better spent in a question and answer session with the constituency." Dennis, who declined to give his full name, said, "The veterans from the American Legion would like him to stop by to talk about health care." Others seemed concerned with the traffic the president's visit would cause. "I think it's nice the president is coming," said Tony Manfredonia, owner of Antonio's Custom Reupholstering. "But there is going to be a lot of traffic." Staff writer Marc Lightdale contributed to this report. "I am an Obama supporter and I'm behind him," said Julia Barr, of Englewood. Like Burks, Barr commends Obama's fundraising efforts. "The GOP is raising a ton of money, so I'm glad he's getting out there and raising money too," she added. "I'm very excited," said Jeannie Amonica, owner of the House of Fish.

"Whether you're for him or against him, it is exciting." Amonica said she was excited Obama would chose to visit a small town like Cresskill, noting that a visit like this will help to put Cresskill, "on the map." Christy Scalici, a cashier at Cresskill Pharmacy said: "I think it's a nice thing for a small town in New Jersey, especially Cresskill. I'm really excited, it's very cool." Although Thomas O'Dell thought it was interesting that the president is coming to a "a more remote area," he also said he wishes Obama would make more of a public appearance. "I don't think he should quarantine himself." O'Dell is not the only person who was critical of the president's stop in Cresskill. Some people believe Obama's time in Cresskill would be better spent doing something other than fundraising. "He is coming only to raise money for the Democratic National Committee," said Yaz Shah, BY AMANDA BASKIND Staff Writer CRESSKILL "I'm shocked," said Anthony Vallone, owner of Paul Anthony.

"Wow, I'm just really surprised." Vallone was surprised to hear President Obama would be visiting Cresskill on Oct. 6 to raise funds for the Democratic National Committee. According to party officials, the cost for attending the fundraiser is $30,400 per person. A party official said the money being raised by the DNC is "part of the $50 million investment in this year's midterm elections," for congressional seats and governorships. "There are a lot of liberal people in the area, so it makes sense," said Vallone, adding that he hopes Obama can generate enough support against the Republicans and the Tea Party movement.

Obama's visit to the borough has created a buzz at other local businesses and among residents. Freddy Carlo, of Dumont, said that he is happy about the president's coming to Cresskill and that the visit is going to be fun for the entire community. "I guess he has to do what he has to do to raise money for his campaign," said Taryn Buries, assistant cooking teacher at WannaBee Chef. "If he can raise the money, more power to him," ADVERTISING FAX 973-569-7279 973-569-7259 CIRCULATION 1-888-504-4280 circulationnorthjersey.com address Jersey Street, 07601-7172. errors.
