The North Jersey Herald News Saturday, September 26, 1992 OBITUARIES George A. Ehrle, 81, owned plant nursery By DONALD DIIORIO The Herald News George A. Ehrle. former owner of a Clifton plant nursery, died Thursday. He was 81.

For 20 years, Mr. Ehrle ran The George Ehrle Nursery on Broad Street. The 73-acre nursery sold evergreens, shrubs and other plants to developers and landscapers as well as the public. He spent a great deal of time traveling around the country to acquire seedlings. "He worked a 15-hour day.

He would start early in the morning and work all day, grabbing a quick dinner in the evening before going back to start on the seedlings," said his son-in-law, Martin McGonigle of Mahwah. Mr. Ehrle was just 10 years old when his father, George started the nursery. He took over in 1952 and ran the nursery in Clifton until 1966 when he sold the land and moved the business to Colts Neck, where he operated the business five more years before retiring. Mr.

Ehrle was a past member of the executive committee of both the Passaic and Monmouth counties' boards of agriculture; American Association of Nurserymen and served as president from 1963-1965 of North Jersey Metropolitan Nur- serymen's Association (now the metropolitan chapter of New Jersey Association of 'Nurserymen, He also was appointed by Gov. Richard J. Hughes in 1964 and reappointed by Gov. William T. Cahill in 1970 to serve as a commissioner on the state Mosquito Control Commission.

He served until 1975. Born in Carlstadt, he moved at 10 to Clifton where he resided 45 years. He attended Clifton schools, graduating from Clifton High. He lived in Colts Neck before moving to Vero Beach, where he spent his summers, coming to Lavalette each year for the winter. Mr.

Ehrle's favorite hobby was fishing. "In Florida, he would fish every day," said his wife, the former Helen Gergowitz. He was predeceased by a brother, Elwood, and a sister, Katherine Sauer. In addition to his wife, surviving are three daughters, Carole Kehoe of Bedminster, Georgia Kaminski of Sea Girt and Lynne McGonigle of Mahwah, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m.

Monday at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Clifton. Sept. 26, 1992 Dr. Dennis O'Brian, 93, chief of ophthalmology at St. Mary's FAIRFIELD Dr.

Dennis Martin O'Brian, 93, died Thursday. Born in Potsdam, N.Y., he lived in Passaic from 1924 to 1980, when he moved here. Dr. O'Brian was head of the of ophthalmology at St. Mary's Hospital, Passaic.

where he practiced since his graduation from the University of Vermont Medical School in 1924. In 1974, he was honored for 50 years of service in that hospital. He was a member of Upper Montclair Country Club, Clifton, 40 years; Perez Council of the Knights of Columbus, Passaic; American Medical Association and American College of Surgeons. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Margaret Desmond. Surviving are two sons, Dr.

Dennis M. of Darien, and' Robert D. of Fairfield; two daughters, Rosemary Donohue of Carmel, and Noreen Drukker of Montclair; two sisters. Virginia O'Brian and Veronica Mast, both of Ridgefield Park; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services are 10 a.m.

26, 1992 Glendon Swarthout, 74, award-winning ning author Associated Press SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Glendon Swarthout, author of "Bless the Beasts and the Children" and other novels set largely in the West, died yesterday at his home. He was 74. Mr. Swarthout, a Michigan native who moved to Arizona in 1959, had suffered from 'emphysema for two years, his son, Miles Swarthout, said.

Mr. Swarthout wrote more than 20 novels as well as numerous short stories, plays and film scripts. Movies based on his books include "Where the Boys Are" and "The Shootist." "Whenever I have an idea for a book, I take two aspirin, drink lots of liquids, go to bed, and call my wife in the morning," he told an interviewer last year. Mr. Swarthout was awarded an O.

Henry Prize in 1960; a gold medal from the National Society of Arts and Letters in 1972; and the Owen Wister Award, bestowed in 1991 by the Western Writers of America for his works. Mr. Swarthout's literary output was diverse. He wrote mysteries, westerns, romances and comedies in addition to children's books. Albert Zampella Land surveyor more than 30 years ago.

Mr. Zampella was a licensed land surveyor and civil -engineer for the state more than 20 years. He was a retired lieutenant colonel for Army Corps of Engineers. He was a fellow and life member of American Society of Civil Engineers and American Society of Military Engineers. He was a parishioner of St.

Mary's RC Church, Pompton Lakes. Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Zigarelli, and several nieces and nephews. Services are 9:45 a.m. Monday at Della Torre Funeral Home, 515 21st Paterson, and 10:30 a.m. at St.

-Mary's RC Church, Pompton Lakes. Scot. 26, 1992 WAYNE Albert Zampella died Thursday. Born in Paterson, he moved here Vincent DeLeonardo Truck driver ELMWOOD PARK Vincent DeLeonardo, 68, died Thursday. Born in Philadelphia, he lived here 31 years.

Mr. DeLeonardo was a truck driver for Textile Motor Express, Paterson, 38 years before retiring in 1986. Surviving are his wife, the former Marie Panarotti; a son, Ralph C. of Elmwood Park; two daughters, Debbie Albarelli of Franklin Lakes and Louise Mascari of Elmwood Park; two brothers, Pompei D'Arco of Elmwood Park and Carl Calvenese of Wurtsboro, N.Y.; four sisters, Lucy Del Vecchio of Totowa, Ann Louise of Clifton, Millie Carfello of North Haledon and Antoinette Angelillo of Midland Park, and three grandchildren. Services are 8:30 a.m.

26, 1992 Salvatore Inturrisi Dye worker POMPTON LAKES Salvatore Inturrisi, 74, died Thursday. Born in Solarino, Sicily, he came to the U.S. in 1955, lived in Pompton Plains, Pequannock and Bloomingdale before moving here in 1964. He was employed by Trio Dye House, Paterson, 25 years before retiring in 1977. He was a World War Italian Army veteran.

He was a member of Solarino Society, Paterson, and Textile Workers of America, Paterson. Surviving are his wife, Giuseppa; two sons, Nunzio and Antonio, both of Pompton Lakes; two daughters, Millie Torsiello of Pompton Lakes and Enza Steele of Lynchburg, 11 grandchildren and a great-grandson. St. Mary's RC Church. Sept. 26, 1992 Eugene Hughes Shipping clerk CLIFTON Eugene Joseph Hughes, 76, died Thursday. Born in Passaic, he moved to Clifton 48 years ago.

Mr. Hughes was a shipping clerk for Uniroyal Passaic, 34 years before retiring in 1974. Mr. Hughes was a member of Knights of Columbus, Regina Mundi Post 3969. He served as an Army medic during World War I1.

Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Ryczkowski; two sons, Thomas J. of Vernon Township and Eugene J. Jr. of Clifton; a daughter, Maryann Hughes of Clifton, and three grandchildren. Services are 10 a.m.

Doherty Ironworker RIDGEFIELD Harry T. Doherty, 69, died Thursday. Born in Little Ferry, he lived in Hackensack before moving here. Mr. Doherty was a structural ironworker with Local 483, Hackensack, 25 years before retiring in 1975.

A World War Army veteran, he was past commander of American Legion and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Doherty, and a brother, Arthur. Surviving are three sisters, Mary Eccleston of Paramus, Doris Speroni of Margate, and Patricia Drummond of Houston; and a brother, William E. of Haledon. Services are 10:30 a.m.

McKeeby, 66, died Thursday. Born in East Orange, he lived in Livingston and Caldwell before moving here 22 years ago. Mr. McKeeby was a statistician for RJR Nabisco New York, 17 years before retiring in 1984. He received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Upsala College, East Orange, in 1951.

Surviving are a friend, Robert Beverst of Wayne; a brother, Richard W. McKeeby of Saverna Park, a niece and a nephew. Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road. Sept.

26, 1992 Russell Schulz Bendix employee SADDLE BROOK Russell Otto Schulz, 68, died Thursday. Born in Little Ferry, he lived in Fair Lawn before moving here four months ago. Mr. Schulz was a tool and die maker for Bendix Teterboro, 45 years. He was a World War Army veteran.

Mrs. DeMol was a longtime member of the Athenia Reformed Church, Clifton, and more recently a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Wayne.

Her husband, William, died in 1985. Surviving are two daughters, Marie Langerlann of Midland Park and Dorothy Chapman of Wayne; a brother, Abe Van Lenten of Florida; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson. 26, 1992 Charles DiGiamo Magna Tek employee HAWTHORNE Charles J. DiGiamo, 62, died Thursday. Born and raised in Paterson, he moved here 15 years ago. Mr. DiGiamo was an employee for Magna Tek Paramus, many years.

He was a parishoner of St. Anthony's R.C. Church. Surviving are his wife, Lillian; a son, David of Hawthorne; a daughter, Lisa of Hawthorne; a brother, Frank DiGiamo of Fair Lawn, and three sisters, Jean Veltri of Wayne, Ida Marco of Paterson and Mary Verderame of Cedar Grove. Anne Schiffman, 76, died Thursday. She lived in Paterson, N.J., before moving here. In 1959, Mr. Swarthout left a teaching post at Michigan State University and moved to Arizona. His novel "The Cadillac Cowboys" was a protest against. Phoenix area's sprawling growth. He retired four years ago.

In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife and sometime co- author, Kathryn Swarthout. Sept. 26, 1992 Ruth Dekker Bookbinder supervisor CLIFTON- Ruth E. (Biegel) Dekker died Thursday. Born in Passaic, she lived most of her life here.

Mrs. Dekker was a supervisor for A. Horowitz Sons Bookbinders, Fairfield, 20 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Passaic. Her husband, Lambert, died in 1969.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol Capo of Clifton, and two grandchildren. Services are 9:30 a.m. Monday at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Ave. Sept. 26, 1992 Betty Scholtz Grandmother of seven GARFIELD Betty (Fink) Scholtz, 84, died yesterday.

She was a lifelong resident of Garfield. Mrs. Scholtz was a homemaker. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Name RC Church. Her husband, Edward, died in 1963.

Surviving are a son, Edward of Towaco; a brother, Steven Fink of New York; two grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Services are 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wozniak Home for Funerals, 80 Midland Wallington, and 9 a.m. at Most Holy Name Church. Sept.
